Donald Appelbe Smith is a Canadian painter
known for his landscapes, particularly of Ontario

Biography

Donald Appelbe Smith was born in 1917 but very little has been written about his artistic career.

Donald A. Smith is the older brother of Gordon Appelbe Smith (1919 -), who has been called one of Canada’s most important painters, recognized for his experimentation throughout the last 60 or so years.

The Smith brothers were born in England, but emigrated to Canada in 1933 when in their teens, settling in Winnipeg. The brothers both attended the Winnipeg School of Art, and both started working as commercial artists after graduating, at the well-known graphic arts firm Bridgens Limited, which produced artwork for the Eatons department store chain.

While Gordon Appelbe Smith is most associated with the West Coast, living, working and painting with Vancouver as his base, some of Donald Appelbe Smith paintings are signed on the back with Palgrave, Ontario as his address. Many of his Ontario scenes are landscapes from that area.

Donald Appelbe Smith also painted in British Columbia.

Donald A. Smith’s landscapes are traditional in look and style, anchored in the Canadian school of painting, and they clearly demonstrate a strong art school education.
